Kilty B’s shut-out Welland to begin playoffs

The Hamilton Kilty B’s defeated the Welland Jr Canadians 3-0 in game one of the Sutherland Cup playoffs at the Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena on Thursday night.

David Egorov shut the door for the B’s, saving all eighteen shots on net while Hamilton fired 50 of their own at Welland’s Ethan Labbé.

Hamilton opened the scoring late in the first period on a player-play goal by Matthew Duarte. Dawson McKinney sent it over to Carson Lloyd who slap passed it to Duarte for a tip into the back crossbar.

In the second, on the penalty kill, Connor Haynes was able to force a turnover at the Welland blueline. Justin Monteith picked up the puck and went backhand to forehand to make it 2-0.

In the third period, Hamilton’s Torin Hession came quickly up the right side of the ice with the puck, whipped it off the back boards and off the Welland netminder and in for a 3-0 lead.

Both teams took a few penalties in this intense game one, with Hamilton going to the box ten times compared to Welland’s seven trips.

Hamilton will play game two against Welland at home on Saturday night at 7 p.m., then play games three and four on the road in Welland on Sunday, March 5 and Tuesday, March 7.
